Project Title:

Hybrid liquid crystals functionalised with anisotropic and active nanoparticles

Abstract:

This project aims to develop functional, photosensitive liquid crystals with strong electro-optic and nonlinear response. The proposed approach centres on hybridisation of materials: integrating anisotropic nanocrystals, photoconductive polymers and liquid crystals to combine their functionalities, enable manipulation by optical beams for a new range of photonic components. Optical and electrical functionalities of such hybrid polymer-liquid crystal-nanocrystals structures will be investigated for applications in optofluidics, light switching and modulation as well as sensing.
